Vanee Foods recalls Sysco chicken-flavored base products due to misbranding

Patriot-News - 2/5/2024

Thousands of pounds of chicken were recalled due to misbranding and undeclared allergens.

The product labeled as a chicken-flavored base might actually contain a beef base, which has soy and wheat, known as allergens, that aren't declared on the product label.

On Feb. 1, Vanee Foods recalled approximately 9,564 pounds of the chicken-flavored base product. The product labeled as chicken-flavored base was produced July 26, 2023, and packed inside cases labeled as beef base, the U.S. Department of Agriculture'sFood Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.

The problem was discovered when the recalling firm notified FSIS that they shipped beef-based product that might be incorrectly labeled as chicken-flavored base.

The product that is subject to recall is the 1-pound plastic tub labeled "Sysco Classic Chicken Flavored Base" with lot code 02673. The item is also packaged in a case labeled as "Sysco Classic Beef Base CF" with lot code 02673 represented on the label.

Even though the product label doesn't have a UDSA mark of inspection, the product is packed in cases that bear the establishment number "EST. 19339 inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to distributors in Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia for further distribution to restaurants.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. FSIS is also concerned about the recalled product being in restaurants' dry storage.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall. They also ensure steps are taken to make sure that the product is no longer available to consumers.

When available, the retail distribution lists will be posted to the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls.

If you purchased the recalled products and are concerned about an illness, contact your healthcare provider. Restaurants that purchased the recalled products are urged not to serve them.

Restaurants are recommended to throw them away or return to the origin of purchase.
